It’s a cool fall morning in California, and the aromatic steam from my cup of orange-spiced black tea mingles with the smoke from my bong. The flavor of hemp flower and tea works well. The weed, OC Oranges, accurately mimics an orange in smell and smoke. It’s Orange Sherb x Oz Kush F2 paired with The Menthol in Compound Genetics’ new line of The Menthol crosses, and I’m enjoying the balance it brings in the morning.
Cannabis and tea are herbal medicines. both aromas and flavors contribute greatly to the effects. The varieties below represent taste and flavor profiles from the three general categories found in pot: fruit, earth, and fuel.

Lime juice
This breed has a stubby nose. With a bright citrus scent, Lime Juice smells like there’s been a mess in the medicine cabinet and vitamin C pills have been sprayed with pine cleaner. Hunted by Esensia Gardens, Lime Juice is a phenotype of Subcool’s Chernobyl and is rich in terpinolene, a terpene also found in pine trees and citrus. Its flavor and taste come from its pedigree, which includes older classics like Trainwreck and Jack’s Cleaner.
Whitethorn Rose
Comedian Bert Kreischer raved about Whitethorn Rose, calling it “the perfect weed.” Hawk vs. Wolf podcast:, and recently caught up with its creator, Johnny Casali of Huckleberry Hill Farms, to explore the fruits of this year’s crop together. Named one of our top strains of the year, Whitethorn Rose combines Paradise Punch and Lemon OG and smells uncannily of the lemon and berry aroma of Froot Loops cereal. It has won various awards as a concentrate, and the flowers of the 2023 harvest, which display a deep purple hue mixed with a pale green tinge, have a wonderful aroma and taste. This strain is reminiscent of one of our favorite fruity flowers, Forbidden Fruit.
COUNTRY:
Mazlo
Created with a combination of Biovortex genetics, Mazlo has the ability to slow down time, producing a soothing old-school stone. Mazlo tastes like a weed from yesteryear, combining woodsy and earthy flavors from the Hindu Kush Mountains and the subtle sweetness of dark red maraschino cherries. Developed by Moon Made Farms, Mazlo smells like sandalwood incense with a sweet gas base. The mostly wretched flavor reveals the lineage of Lolab, a wild primordial landscape native to Indian Kashmir, pioneered by Deepak and Irazinig of the Indian Landrace Exchange. Biovortex’s Jesse Dodd combined Lolab with Cherry Lime Dog BC1 F2 and Mazar x Black Dog BC6. Tina Gordon at Moonmade, a longtime Biovortex collaborator, then matched the result with Biovortex’s Orange Valley Sun (Orange Zkittlez x (SFV OG x Black Dog BC4)). The Black Dog backcrosses highlight the flavor of fermented cherry myrcene. Mazlo is an opportunity to enjoy the nostalgic, earthy and resinous basket associated with the original Kush family, combined with the dense flower production and fruity element of more modern varieties.
Fuel
Motorbreath x Coffin Candy
This is for smokers who realize that the gas never left the building. Sense bred the Motorbreath x Coffin Candy cross bred by Duke of Erb and Doja and presented the phenotypes at a recent members-only event at Chronic Culture in San Francisco. Motorbreath x Coffin Candy smells fizzy and tastes like a caramel topping of toasted sugar. It would work well as a wake-up and baking smoke paired with coffee, except for its sky-high stone effects. Gas is what got CEO Steve Griffithy going as a grower, and he’s hoping to reignite consumer preference for that profile of cannabis. “While we’ve enjoyed a wave of candy profiles over the last few years, we’d love to see Chems and OGs come back into the market,” Griffith said. Also in the Sense pheno tasting deck were several Tea Time variants, Zkittlez x RS11, from Wizard Trees Genetics, cutting through the wall of other samples like a hot cup of Earl Grey. Tea Time has a citrusy bergamot flavor backed by a malty black tea flavor.
